Ener1 and Th!nk sign the largest li-ion battery contract in auto history
This breaking news is reported in full in Autobloggreen. The entire contract is reported to be worth a staggering $200 million in expected sales for Ener1 in 2008-2010.
Given that they are also reported to have promised amazing reductions in the price of the battery, that sounds like a pretty ambitious sales program. After all, there was mention of $1500 per battery. Can Th!nk really get up to those sales volumes in such a short space of time, especially with the Japanese manufacturers apparently going gung-ho for EVs for the upcoming Tokyo show.
It's worth reading the whole of the Autobloggreen article and the postings that follow it. Think's lack of coherent communication on its website takes a few knocks for failing to convert potential early adopters (myself included) and the whole Ener1 story starts to look a bit shaky when you read more about their financial position.
I'd like to believe that this is the start of the first real production EV for the mass market, but somehow the dots just aren't joining up the way I'd like. As another report says in cNet news, "Mass production for Think, however, can be a little light on the mass. In July, Think raised $60 million. The goal, stated then, was to get to 250 cars a month within a year." Something doesn't add up.
