Apple + McLaren = electric car love child
An electric car that does 0-60 in 2.9 seconds, offers 230 mile range, has regenerative braking, twin electric motors and 4-wheel drive, created by an ex-McLaren designer - and it's even got gull wing doors! At the current exchange rate its £55K price ticket probably looks like a snip to anyone holding their breath for the Tesla, so this UK dream car could be just what they're after.
Except that's all it really is at the moment - a dream car. The P1-E (thankfully a temporary name) from JJAD, former McLaren man Jim Dowle first manifested itself as the P1 sports car back in Feb last year. After a sizzling media reception it's suddenly morphed into an electric car.
Dowle says, “All the electric cars produced to date have been compromised in one way or another and most have been of little attraction to the enthusiast driver. We decided it was time to create an affordable electric sports car that combined the advantages of conventionally-engined machines with those of electric ones, without the disadvantages of either – in short, a drivers’ car for the 21st century." Hurrah to that! Bring it on.
The prototype, however, is yet to get up and running and Dowle is still looking for more partners/funding. A lot like most of us these days, so this beauty is still just a dream.
That's when I got this idea. Maybe he should buddy up with Apple.
In a recent report 21% of the 4,000 people surveyed said they would be prepared to buy an Apple electric car while 48% said they'd buy one from BMW. I tend to share Jalopnik's view that Apple don't know enough about cars to design one, but they are seriously good at creating popular and user-friendly gadgets. In particular they excel at user/machine interfaces like the iPod click wheel, so just think of what they could do with the interior of an electric car where the dashboard would need a total rethink in any case.
Apple's not short of cash and if they buddied up with an ex-McLaren designer the resulting car could be revolutionary and truly spectacular. A fabulous automotive love child. There you are, JJAD ... sorted!
