Next generation vehicle architecture or the first LEGO car? You choose.

Just imagine how it would be if you could design your own electric vehicle with all the motor, battery and drive train basics built in. The modular TREXA EV lets you do just that. It provides a low profile base - known in the trade as a 'skateboard' - with all that stuff built in and you just stack whatever you want on top, so not only does it look the way you want, but you get to specify the acceleration, suspension and speed.

TREXA EV skateboardThis is aimed at specialised vehicle developers who can design custom 'vehicle apps' specifically for the TREXA lithium-drive platform. What you get is a ready-to-program electric drive system, four-wheel-drive, 4-wheel independent suspension adjustable for height and terrain and a scalable wheel base of 64", 80" or 96".

The modular battery system offers a choice of capacities that'll deliver from 25 to 125 miles range and it charges in under 4 hours at 240VAC. It's also adaptable to smart grid, range extenders and other emerging technologies.

If you can't wait to start designing your own one, here's a few applications that can pair with it. How about an innovative application docking system for permanent or interchangeable bodies? Or a developer software kit that enables CAD-based application design and validation directly on the platform? Or modules for remote operation?

Realistically this will most likely be used for specialised utility vehicles for commercial, municipal and military fleets. It could also act as a test bed or prototyping mule for transportation designers and developers of vehicle systems as well as a chassis for kit vehicles and low-volume productions.

What would be much more interesting would be to switch the body out when you fancy a change ... which reminds engadget readers of the AUTOnomy concept car from GM and its predecessor the Hy-wire. I wonder if they both looked so much like they were made of LEGO as the TREXA???

Looks like a great concept, I think the Lego feel comes from the wheels and tires, they look like they were lifted from a Lego Technic set. Having the ability to go from a four door sedan to a two door sports car on the weekends would be such a game changer!
