Renault's £6K EV - is it just a fancy scooter?

At last ... a concept car that's actually made it into production in only a year. While the reviewer at Car magazine refers to Renault's 2009 concept EV having much more funky features, the production version of the Twizy at the 2010 Paris Motor Show gets his thumbs-up all the same. The Renault Twizy is a tandem style 2-seater that will go on sale in the UK in early 2012 for around £6,000.

Renault Twizy electric car available in UK early 2012With two engine size options delivering a top speed of 28mph or 46mph it's really intended as a secondary vehicle for nipping around town and is classed as a quadracycle, so it won't qualify for the £5,000 electric car rebate.

That makes it a kinda expensive glorified scooter, as it doesn't have full door panels, so you're exposed to the elements. OK, extended panels can be fitted as an extra, but that still promises a mostly chilly/wet driving experience for those of us in the UK.

At its Paris launch Renault was offering all kinds of crazy livery options with this car and my girlie side almost got sucked into that as an attraction. But with a £6K price tag I'd want more for my money frankly and I can't see the Twizy gaining much traction with the wider driving audience.

Come on, Renault - you can do better than this!
