The electric supercar from Mercedes - what's not to like?

As was said in 'When Harry met Sally'...Yes, yes, yes, YES, YES, YESSSS. I'm loving this big beast from Mercedes.

Mercedes-Benz gullwinged electric supercarOK, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell will cost an absolute whack, but in return you're going to get styling, performance, exclusivity and desirability to compete with the best cars on the road. Range will no doubt still be an issue, but that will be sorted some day soon. And this is after all a prototype, but hey let's just enjoy it for the gorgeous hunk it is.

Allow yourself to drool over the E-Cell's 526 horsepower - more like having a cavalry charge to yourself! And it goes from 0 to 60 mph in four seconds. I can just see Jeremy Clarkson fighting with his inner unbeliever to get a drive in this one.

The E-cell uses the same aluminium space frame as the AMG SLS that many people recognise as the growling safety car used when things go awry in Formula One races. What a shame it doesn't have the same engine noise - or any noise at all for that matter - but then you could always add whatever noise you wanted.

In case you're interested, this Mercedes can get more downforce for better handling at speed because, with no exhaust system, it's been able to tweak the front air splitter and rear diffuser. Nice.

Mercedes is saying the car will see production in 2013 and Wired calculates it'll sell at £250K or $307K at current exchange rates. So they'll only make a handful, but isn't that a big part of the appeal? And all the fancy technology will start to trickle down to humbler vehicles just as paddle shifters and traction control have done already.

For me the future of EVs just got a whole lot brighter.
