500bhp electric supercar from Lexus
Toyota is rumoured to be buddying up with Tesla to produce its own all-electric super sports car program. According to Motortrend joint plans are in motion to create a car that would rival the Mercedes SLS AMG E-cell and the Audi e-tron.
That's why it's going to produce more than 500 bhp and will get from zero to 60mph in about 4 seconds. It uses in-wheel motors of course and a switch that lets the driver select between four driving programs to let them regulate battery use. But I'm guessing that anyone lucky enough to get one of these will just plonk it straight into supersport mode and that's where it'll stay. You really don't want to be seen tootling about in a machine like this - unless, of course, you're one of those dodgy guys I saw cruising along the bar fronts in Puerto Banus in their open topped Ferraris ...
Source: MotortrendBut before you start getting all excited at this glamorous new electric supercar, I have to reveal that we're unlikely to see this baby until some time around 2015. For now all we can look at is this artist's impression of the car attacking the Nurburgring in Germany.
This is one EV that definitely needs an engine sound as an optional extra. I quite agree with one of the comments on the Motortrends article that it wouldn't be half the fun hurling this one round a track in total silence. That reminds me - I just read in EV World that Danish start-up ECTunes is planning to offer a service that provides 'intelligent sound' for electric vehicles. The intelligent angle is that it only projects the sound in the direction that the car is moving, so it's only heard by the people who are in its line of approach. Very sensible I'm sure, but if I'm driving a supercar I want EVERYONE to know it.
