Electric Smart Fourtwo coming to London

London's network of free public recharging stations must surely have made it a no-brainer as Daimler's location choice to test plug-in versions of its Smart Fourtwo from mid-December. The plan is to deliver electric Smarts to about 100 lucky customers in London with similar pilots running in two other European cities.

Axeon powers up DaimlerChrysler's SMART car

So Hybrid Technologies is not the only company supplying lithium-ion batteries to the electric version of the DaimlerChrysler SMART car. Scotland-based battery expert Axeon is now in on the game with a 22kWh energy li-ion phosphate battery that is claimed to be easier to use, cheaper and safer than the current li-ion cell chemistry. This, says Axeon, will significantly reduce the cost of electric vehicles to bring them in line with petrol and diesel models.
