Why I'm putting my money on the Japanese for EVs

Someone in the EV business said to me the other day, "If you were a US car designer, would you be coughing up the $1 billion to develop an EV? I wouldn't. They have a duty to shareholders. The former EVs weren't commercial propositions - they were too expensive. How many would you have to sell to justify that level of investment?"

 

To me it seems that Nissan and Toyota aren't looking for a shortcut to market - they're going for the mass market and they're prepared to rewrite the rule book to do it.

If Tesla = iPhone, Project Better Place = AT&T

Here are two organisations who look to me like they might just be aiming for success in the electric car market and for totally different reasons. One of them hails from Silicon Valley and adopts a typically left field approach to the sector while the other is a mainstream automotive player taking the opposite approach. One of them has an hourly R&D budget of ... $1 million. I'll let you guess which one that is.
